New Delhi Airport aka the Indira Gandhi International Airport has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first airport in India to connect 150 destinations worldwide. This accomplishment solidifies its status as a premier global aviation hub. The announcement coincides with the launch of a new direct flight between Delhi and Bangkok-Don Mueang (DMK) by Thai AirAsia X, further enhancing connectivity.
A Step Forward in Global Connectivity
The new Delhi-Bangkok route, operated by an Airbus A330 aircraft, will initially offer two flights per week, with plans to increase to four flights weekly by January 2025. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), expressed pride in this achievement, calling it a testament to the airport’s commitment to improving global connectivity and delivering top-tier travel experiences.
Expanding Horizons for Travelers
In recent years, Delhi Airport has focused on broadening its reach, adding over 20 exclusive international destinations. This effort ensures that travelers have more options for seamless journeys across continents. “We are proud to lead India into a new era of aviation,” said Jaipuriar, emphasizing their goal to be a preferred hub for passengers worldwide.
India’s Aviation Boom
The growth of New Delhi Airport mirrors India’s broader aviation expansion. Over the past decade, the number of operational airports in the country has more than doubled. In 2014, India had 74 active airports; by 2024, the number soared to 158. This growth has been fueled by initiatives like the UDAN scheme, which has launched flights on 613 regional routes and added 87 new airports, making air travel accessible to more people.
