Hyderabad, being a major IT hub, attracts a myriad of individuals from across India and the globe, making the airport a pivotal hub of connectivity. In the midst of this dynamic setting, understanding the ins and outs of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport becomes crucial.

Named in honor of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad achieved a significant milestone as the first airport in India to introduce domestic e-boarding in December 2015, followed by the initiation of international e-boarding in October 2020.

Further highlighting its global standing, the airport has secured a place in AirHelp’s prestigious list of the top 10 airports worldwide.

Constructed under a pioneering public-private partnership model, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport stands as India’s first greenfield airport. This comprehensive facility encompasses an integrated passenger terminal, a cargo terminal, and two efficiently operated runways.

In addition to its primary functions, the airport hosts aviation training facilities, a fuel farm, a solar power plant, and two maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facilities. Serving as a critical hub for Alliance Air (India), Amazon Air, Blue Dart Aviation, SpiceJet, and IndiGo, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport also holds the status of being a focus city for Air India.

Annually, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport witnesses a substantial flow of passengers and aircraft, reflecting its significance in the realm of aviation.

As the fourth busiest airport in India by passenger traffic, it handled almost 21 million passengers and over 140,000 tonnes (150,000 short tons) of cargo between April 2022 and March 2023.

Hyderabad Airport Terminal

Currently Hyderabad Airport has only one integrated terminal to handle domestic and international departures and arrivals of passengers and one cargo terminal.

In the past, there was a special terminal for Haj pilgrims, but it has been stopped since 2023. Now, Haj pilgrims will use the same terminal as other passengers, with four special counters provided for their convenience in the international terminal.

The western side of the terminal handles international flights while the eastern side is for domestic operations.

Passenger Terminal – The recently developed passenger terminal can handle 34 million passengers per annum. The terminal has 10 baggage claim belts – 7 for domestic flights and 3 for international flights, 83 parking bays (including remote parking bays and aero bridges), 24 gates for flights with bus transport and arrival facilities, 12 bridges for passengers to board planes, contact stands and a special area for passengers transferring from one domestic flight to another.

There are 44 counters at departure terminal and 20 at arrivals for immigration checks, and 98 desks where passengers can check in, including 54 self-check-in kiosks.

Overall, there are nine gates, with seven on the south side of the terminal and two on the north side. The airport is also equipped with public and VIP lounges operated by Encalm Lounge. Before going through security, there’s a place called the “airport village” where people can meet up for passenger pick-up.

Cargo Terminal – The cargo terminal is located on the west side of the passenger terminal. It’s run by Hyderabad Menzies Air Cargo Pvt Ltd, a partnership between GHIAL (51%) and Menzies Aviation (49%). Distinguishing itself from others, the cargo terminal boasts a unique feature – the Pharma Zone.

This special area ensures medicines are stored at the perfect temperature, making it the first of its kind at any Indian airport. This is a standout feature for RGIA, given that a significant 70% of the airport’s exports consist of pharmaceuticals. Recognizing its importance, Lufthansa Cargo initiated a specialized medicine hub at this airport in May 2011, further emphasizing its exceptional status.
